With Self and Truth, the transpersonal stages of psychic, subtle, causal and ultimate tend to unfold. The long-term Zen practices after those experiences appear to bring more awareness, acceptance, love, stable identity, and a greater sense of reality. From the perspective of western psychology, satori might be understood as a sudden leap towards transpersonal stages of consciousness which often comes after one has reached one’s peak of personal stages of consciousness. This process seems similar to the third viewpoint of satori and becoming a Buddha.The altered state of consciousness is a kind of peak experience in that it is a variable one without a firm structure accompanying a glimpse of some transpersonal states. The consciousness tends to develop gradually from altered states to a new structure by way of structuralization. The states might be distinguished into natural states and altered states. While the latter is continuous and lasting, the former is transitory and passing. As this involves the Zen practices between two, it has the structure of ‘satori-Zen practices-becoming a Buddha’.The states and the structures of consciousness are quite different according to the western developmental approach to human consciousness and the recent research of brain sciences.
From its perspective, satori is the first enlightenment and becoming a Buddha is the last. This study tries to understand the third meaning with regard to the developmental approach to the structures of consciousness in western psychology.
